St. Elizabeth's Vestry Retreat
Wednesday in Holy Week
Luke 9:51: “he set his face like flint toward Jerusalem” recaptures a text found in Is.50:7: “he set his face like flint toward Jerusalem.”
Together, they seek to capture the resolute nature of both the prophet and Jesus to fulfill their God-given mission. The gates of hell would not fear, intimidate, or halt the mission of bringing Good News to the poor and hope to the hopeless.
It’s no accident that the term flint was utilized. A flint was a fragment of a larger rock. It was often sharp and used as a cutting tool. Flint, because of its chemical nature, was also used to spark a fire.
As we journey through Holy Week, let us set our faces as flint first as a reminder that we are part of the mystical rock upon which Jesus builds his church to fulfill His mission with resolve and to be the spark that lights the fires of hope, renewal, and love. Blessed Holy Tuesday.
